Meet Dr. Ali Dehghantanha, an academic-entrepreneur in cybersecurity and a Canada Research Chair in Cybersecurity and Threat Intelligence. He is the founder and the Director of the Master of Cybersecurity and Threat Intelligence (MCTI) program and the director of Cyber Science Lab, a research lab dedicated to advance research and training in cybersecurity – at the University of Guelph. Dr. Dehghantanha launched his unique vision for our cutting-edge and industry-focused master’s program in 2019. This program provides students with the advanced skills required to become leaders in cybersecurity, cyber threat intelligence, and digital forensics.

Please share some of your background?

I was born and grew up in the city of Mashhad, Iran. I studied in Malaysia (obtained a Ph.D. in Security in Computing) and spent time in the United Kingdom doing my post doc in digital forensics.

What is your area of expertise?

My areas of expertise are cyber threat hunting and intelligence. 

What brought you to SoCS at the University of Guelph?

The opportunity to build a hands-on, unique master’s program in cyber threat intelligence.

What are your research interests?

My research interests focus on malware analysis, adversarial learning, threat hunting and threat intelligence.

What do you look for in a graduate student?

First is a high ethical standard, then hard work and a passion for cybersecurity. 

What classes do you teach?

I teach master’s level courses in Cyber Threat Intelligence and Cyber Threat Hunting.
